Social media or a website? Which pays off better for a small business

Small business owners often ask us: "I have an Instagram page — why spend money on a website?" It's a fair question: social media is free, quick to set up, and it's where customers spend their time. But social media and a website don't do the same job. Let's compare.

The advantages of social media

  • A free, fast start. A page takes a few minutes to set up.
  • The audience is already there. People spend time there anyway, and it's easy to reach them with posts and ads.
  • Live conversation. Comments, messages, stories — direct contact with customers.

The risks of social media

  • The page isn't yours. The account can be blocked or hacked, or the platform can change its rules. Followers gathered over years can vanish in a day.
  • Reach keeps shrinking. Only some of your followers see your posts; reaching the rest means paying for ads.
  • Weak in search. Someone searching for "dental clinic in Baku" or "order office furniture" mostly lands on websites from Google and rarely finds social media pages.
  • Information gets scattered. Prices, address and terms get lost among old posts.

What a website gives you

  • An address you own. company.az is your property; no platform can shut it down.
  • Customers from Google. A well-built site shows up in search and brings customers even without ads.
  • Trust. A website and an email like [email protected] make a company look serious — especially to corporate clients and in tenders.
  • Everything in one place. Services, prices, portfolio, address, an order or enquiry form.
  • Measurement. You see where visitors came from, what they looked at and how many got in touch.

The answer: both together

The best results come when social media and a website work together. Social media grabs attention and builds conversation; the website turns that attention into enquiries and sales:

  • link to your site in your Instagram bio and in your posts;
  • put your social media links and a WhatsApp button on the site;
  • send ads straight to the service page on your site — with the price and an enquiry form waiting for the customer.
