A backup is the only reliable way to bring a site back after a failed update, an accidentally deleted file or a hack.
The 3-2-1 rule
- 3 copies — the original plus two backups;
- on 2 different types of storage;
- 1 copy somewhere completely separate (for example, on your own computer or in cloud storage).
Practical tips
- Back up both the files and the database — articles, orders and customer data live in the database;
- Always take a backup before big changes (a design update, a new plugin, a CMS update);
- Keep several days of backups — sometimes a problem is only noticed a few days later;
- Once or twice a year, check that restoring from a backup actually works;
- Download all your data before cancelling a service.
The space your backups take up in your hosting account is shown on the hosting card. If you need a restore from backup, contact support.
